Studio Apartment & Greenhouse

This custom backyard studio and greenhouse in Redwood City was designed as a distinctive garden retreat that complements the architecture and character of the client’s main residence. Conceived as both a functional greenhouse and flexible studio, the accessory structure combines abundant natural light with carefully considered architectural detailing to create an inviting destination within the landscape.

Expansive windows and glazed doors surround the interior, providing the daylight essential for greenhouse use while establishing a strong visual connection to the garden. A raised central roof element introduces additional height and natural light, giving the compact structure a memorable pavilion-like presence. Prominent stone features provide warmth, texture, and visual weight, balancing the transparency of the extensive glazing with the permanence of natural materials.

Carefully proportioned rooflines, detailed exterior trim, and a balanced composition reinforce the refined residential character of the design and help integrate the structure with the surrounding property. More than a simple greenhouse, the completed project provides a versatile space for gardening, creative pursuits, relaxation, and quiet enjoyment of the landscape—combining functionality, craftsmanship, natural materials, and abundant daylight within a distinctive backyard retreat.

Project Testimonial

"Hi Gary, I just wanted to let you know how much we’ve enjoyed working with you over the past few months. You’ve done a wonderful job and working with you on our plans for the backyard studio has been a delight. At this time, we are putting the construction portion of the project on hold, but we want you to know that if the opportunity arises, we would love to work with you again. And you have most certainly earned absolutely glowing references from us."
- Best as always, Rose and Robert
