Hearst Castle Theater

This approximately 17,000-square-foot theater in San Simeon presented a unique architectural challenge: accommodating a five-story-high screen within a two-story height limitation established by the California Coastal Commission. The solution was to place approximately three stories of the building below grade, allowing the theater to accommodate the dramatic screen and required interior volume while maintaining an exterior scale compatible with the surrounding development. The architecture was carefully designed to complement the adjoining Hearst Castle Visitor Center and integrate naturally into the site.

The theater accommodates approximately 360 guests and was designed to provide an accessible and memorable introduction to the Hearst Castle experience. ADA accessibility was incorporated throughout the facility, while the lobby provides an important connection to the history and artistry of the estate through the display of 17th-century tapestries from the Hearst collection. Together, the theater, lobby, and exhibition areas create an environment that serves the significant number of visitors who pass through the Hearst Castle complex each year.

The theater was purpose-built to present Hearst Castle – Building the Dream, a film produced specifically for this venue and continuing to be shown there today. Original cinematography is combined with historic film footage and photographs from the 1920s and 1930s to tell the story of the Castle’s design, construction, and history across the monumental five-story screen. By placing much of the building below grade, the project reconciles the technical demands of a large-format theater with the sensitive architectural and environmental context of San Simeon, creating a distinctive visitor experience without overwhelming its surroundings.
