This 9,300-square-foot custom residence is dramatically situated on the coastal bluffs of Carlsbad, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The two-story home with full basement and roof deck was carefully designed in response to a constrained site, Coastal Commission requirements, and local development standards while fulfilling the client’s vision for a distinctive contemporary residence with a softer, more livable character. Flowing rooflines, curved architectural forms, natural stone, broad overhangs, and extensive glazing help balance the home’s substantial scale while creating a dynamic coastal presence.

The open floor plan is organized around the ocean, with the primary living spaces designed to capture expansive views and connect directly with outdoor areas along the bluff. A dramatic 33-foot-radius telescoping glass door opens the interior to the rear patio, dissolving the boundary between indoors and outdoors and revealing sweeping views across the Pacific horizon. The residence includes four bedrooms and four bathrooms, along with an office and conference room with wine storage, game room, home theater, exercise room, and a four-level elevator connecting the various levels of the home.

Architecturally, the residence combines sculptural contemporary forms with warmer materials and carefully articulated details to create the “soft contemporary” character envisioned by the Architect, Richard E. Kaufman. Curved metal roof forms and sweeping horizontal lines contrast with substantial stone-clad walls, while layered facades, projecting overhangs, and varied window openings add depth and help break down the scale of the residence. Together, the ocean-oriented floor plan, expansive glazing, roof deck, and carefully composed architecture create a highly customized coastal home designed around panoramic views, indoor-outdoor living, and its extraordinary bluff-top setting.
