Green Building Alliance

Gary Harcourt was one of the architects present along with various builders and building officials who attended the first Green Building Alliance meeting hosted at the Courtyard Marriott. Wes Willhoit of Estrella Associates, Inc., a green construction development company, shared about the SLO Green Building Ordinance for both Residential and Non-Residential projects, defining the limits of each as to the new requirements for processing and building for complying with these requirements.

Mr. Harcourt brought back a couple of interesting points that came out of that meeting. One point is that there are two methods for single-family residences to achieve the required points for compliance. The other key point is that there are different requirements for new construction of residences; one for new homes smaller than 2,500sf and those that are equal or greater than 2,500sf. Both must achieve a minimum of 75 points utilizing the “Green Point Rated System but those homes equal to or greater than 2,500sf have several additional requirements which improve the performance of the home but also add some initial costs, both in processing and in construction. Future meetings will be announced.
